Just south of Cherbourg is the town of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte which is famous for its château which dates from the eleventh and twelfth centuries. What remains are fortifications flanked by towers and a massive keep. The ruins have been classified as a historic monument since 1840. Nearby is the small cemetery which is the final resting place for local celebrity, writer Jules Amédée Barbey d’Aurevilly.
