002 Querqueville011Just something different for a change...  It seems like I'm always writing about churches and castles but failing to post anything else.  A few years ago I planted some hollyhocks known as rose trémière in France and each year since, they've been coming back bigger and better.  I tried growing some with different colors but haven't had much success.  I wonder if anyone knows about trying to grow them indoors first and then transplanting them ?

alerte rouge500926Well, the weather predictions over the weekend proved to be true and 60cm (about 2 feet) of snow fell in 24 hours.  What a mess it turned out to be.  Météo-France used the color red to denote extreme snow and sleet for the first time in its history.  And, of course, it had to be in Normandy.  Nearly 60,000 people lost electricity, hundreds of cars were stranded on the highways, trains stopped running and ferries were unable to moor due to the 80km per hour winds.  One of the worst stories I heard involved people stranded on a train near Caen with filthy toilets and nowhere to go.  What an uncomfortable and smelly situation it must have been for those passengers !  At its height, I had to sweep the heavy, wet snow from the roof to keep it from caving in.  Yesterday morning, I spent some time walking around town taking some photos of Querqueville under the snow.http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8248/8550327309_cd083a7bfe_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8096/8551426810_535d6a8ed4_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8365/8551426548_044d7058cc_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8528/8551424328_f00b2f0bb8_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8236/8551423258_37885b2087_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8102/8551419850_f6fa7b63fd_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8250/8551418738_6a9ebc5ac3_b.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8508/8390904887_012fa54ac5_b.jpgIt is only 10 a.m. and the snow is still coming down.  The forecast says that it won't last very long so I thought I would take some photos of what may be our only snowfall this winter.  As you can see, there are very few cars on the Boulevard de l'Hague and Querqueville plage this morning is quiet and forlorn.  I doubt that anyone will be using the picnic tables today.http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8501/8390905087_7f7bf206e3_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8362/8391989176_1504414f47_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8080/8391988612_a39cde370c_b.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8505/8390904073_82c04e7bd0_b.jpg

For each new morning with its light,

For rest and shelter in the night,

For health and food,

For love and friends,

For everything that Jesus sends !

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8208/8254978912_7a77012038_b.jpgIngrédients :

1 œuf
100g de sucre en poudre
260g de farine de blé
1 pincée de sel
125g de beurre mou
250g de crème de marrons

Préparation :

     1

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7001/6568747553_83ebbb8c56_b.jpgIn those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.  This was the first enrolment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria.  So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town.  And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.  While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son.  She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.  Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.  The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.  The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.  And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”  And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to all those on whom his favor rests.”  (Luke 2:1-14)  http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7012/6568745247_837049dbd5_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7015/6568740487_02a3a821b8_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7014/6568743511_8ca4b7a695_b.jpgChristmas Eve was very nice this year and for the first time in a long time, we stayed in Querqueville to celebrate.  I bought some pretty table napkins with a mistletoe and ribbon design as well as a new, red table runner.  http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7146/6568743807_507b9f956a_b.jpgI then decorated the table with a variety of greens, pinecones and candles.  For our meal, I served several courses which included a bouquet de cerises, olives à la Méridionale and gambas for our aperitif ; http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7153/6568747961_a37fd8b986_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6568745903_673931b17e_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7174/6568739893_ae4c6fd653_b.jpgHors d’œuvre of Croustillants Saint-Jacques and toasts au foie gras ; http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7011/6568746627_dcd03db965_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/6568738267_408e47b35c_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6568736725_2d3ca0e50b_b.jpgthe main meal consisted of magret de canard, pommes de terre et champignons and haricots verts à la crème forestière ; http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7148/6568744719_0120dca3a1_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7002/6568735485_97c1aa1873_b.jpgafterward, we had salade verte, Camembert, figues fraîches and a bûche de Noël.  http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7017/6568738725_c906d2e78b_b.jpgEverything was washed down with apple cider.  C’était bon !!!  On Christmas morning, we opened our presents underneath the tree.  http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7035/6568742827_573112737f_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/6568737741_1a34ac1661_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7147/6568748307_227022fc98_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7145/6568744169_300fac3d96_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7027/6568737045_31df247183_b.jpghttp://farm8.staticflickr.com/7174/6568741959_4d7d1cdb63_b.jpgI got a new hat, a book about Tintin, a handsome Tommy Hilfiger shirt, some special socks to use when hiking (I am walking the Way of Saint James in the spring, in case you didn’t know already) and several cards from friends and family.  http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7175/6568741337_6cd2728a4c_b.jpgAt 10:30AM I went to Mass where they had this beautiful nativity set up before the altar.  I would like to thank you all for your holiday wishes.  May the peace of our Lord be with you today and throughout the New Year.  Joyeux Noël !!!
